Starting Readers Workshop: A How-To-Guide for Teachers                                  

(Grades 3 – 5)

You will learn to:

  • Identify and explain the parts of Readers Workshop.
  • Examine the use of formative assessment in your reading instruction.
  • Select engaging literature for your students.
  • Write learning targets to support a mini-lesson.
  • Create and model a mini-lesson.

Assessing Students in Readers Workshop: How to KNOW What Your Students KNOW  

(Grades 3 – 5)

You will learn to:

  • Select engaging literature for your students.
  • Examine the use of formative assessment in your reading instruction.
  • Identify and evaluate different ways to assess students.
  • Create assessments and practice monitoring and recording student growth.

Writing Across the Curriculum: How Teachers Can Increase and Embed Writing in ALL Subjects

(Grades 4 – 8)

You will learn to:

  • Select engaging literature for your students.
  • Develop skills and instructional practices that will support the writing experiences of all students in all subjects.
  • Identify and organize different types of writing.
  • Plan and demonstrate a writing strategy in your subject area.

Content Area Reading: How EVERY Teacher Can Be a Reading Teacher

(Grades 5 – 8)

You will learn to:

  • Select engaging literature for your students.
  • Identify and use before reading, during reading and after reading strategies for informational text.
  • Evaluate your approach to teaching reading and writing strategies in a content area and identify areas for modification and improvement.

Small Group Instruction: It’s Not the Size – It’s What You Do with It

(Grades 3 – 5)

You will learn to:

  • Identify the purposes for small group instruction.
  • Examine the use of formative assessment in your reading instruction.
  • Use data to create small groups.
  • Identify and practice teaching reading strategies in small groups.
  • Select engaging literature for your students.
